Merry Christmas

Not a Creature was Stirring

With Christmas 2024 fast approaching, many people hope for a white Christmas.  There is an air of peace and quiet after snow stops falling.  Third trick operator at Signal Station 55 (Burr Road), Tom Donahue, found this to be true after he kept trains running during overnight snow in December 1960.  He paused while crossing the main line to snap this photo before cleaning snow off his car and driving home.  You can sense the stillness and solitude.  The four main line tracks await the first trains to glide through the interlocking and kick up the freshly fallen snow.  No sign of traffic on the Connecticut Turnpike (now I95) above the railroad.  The sun highlights the snow-topped boxcars, especially a bright red Burlington.  Add the classic New Haven anchor bridge with its big, black breakers and we have a great railroad scene with no train in sight.

Tom Donahue found that not a creature was stirring, not even a train, when snow fell at Burr Road just before Christmas 1960.
